MUNCIE, Indiana — Mark Trent opened his home to a couple with nowhere to go. That generosity cost him his life.
Ian Shelden, 46, was sentenced this week to 69 years in prison for murdering his 55-year-old roommate — a killing hidden for years on a Tennessee mountainside, until Shelden’s own words led police straight to the bones.
A Deadly Night in a Trusted Home
In early 2016, Shelden and his wife Tracy were living in Trent’s Muncie home when a confrontation turned fatal.
Shelden later told investigators he picked up a tent stake and struck Trent in the face. Trent asked why.
Shelden hit him again — hard enough to leave a hole in his skull. A third blow finished it.
A Cover-Up That Almost Held
Shelden cleaned the scene, then used Trent’s own debit card to buy a tote bag from Walmart. He stuffed the body inside and loaded it onto Trent’s truck.
In Tennessee, he tried to burn the remains. When the fire failed, he threw the tote off a steep cliff.
For five years, Trent’s family had no answers.
ATM Cameras Unraveled Everything
Someone was draining Trent’s bank accounts — making withdrawals across Indiana, Tennessee, Florida, and Michigan — for months after his disappearance.
ATM surveillance footage caught the person responsible. In one clip, he was wearing women’s clothing.
It was Ian Shelden.
When police tracked the couple to Tennessee in 2021, Tracy Shelden identified her husband in the footage. Shelden gave two interviews, each more incriminating than the last.
He eventually led investigators to a mountainside, where they found a bag of human bones. A forensic anthropologist confirmed it was Mark Trent.
69 Years
A jury found Shelden guilty of murder, obstruction of justice, and auto theft.
“He thought he was off the hook,” said Delaware County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Hoffman. “He was wrong.”
Mark Trent gave Ian Shelden a home. Shelden repaid him with a tent stake and a cliff in Tennessee.
Sixty-nine years was the jury’s answer.
