An Indianapolis woman is facing multiple criminal charges after authorities say she plowed into a pregnant driver at nearly 95 mph, causing injuries so severe that the woman’s newborn son later died.
Latonya Berry, 31, has been charged with causing death while operating a vehicle intoxicated, reckless homicide, causing serious bodily injury while intoxicated, and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, according to court records. The charges were filed this week, though the crash itself happened months earlier.
Authorities say the collision occurred on November 26, 2025, when Kyra Johnson was stopped in a turn lane in her sedan, waiting to complete her turn. Berry allegedly crossed into Johnson’s lane while driving roughly 95 mph in a 40 mph zone and struck her head-on. With traffic on either side, Johnson reportedly had no way to avoid the impact. The crash left the front of her sedan crushed and its windshield shattered, while Berry’s SUV flipped onto its side.
Johnson, who was eight months pregnant at the time, suffered life-threatening injuries. She reportedly spent nearly two weeks in intensive care, underwent several emergency surgeries, and was kept intubated and sedated for 13 days while recovering from multiple fractures and a deep laceration to her forehead and scalp.
The force of the crash reportedly caused Johnson’s placenta to rupture, forcing doctors to perform an emergency C-section. Her son, identified as Kye, was immediately taken to a children’s hospital, while Johnson remained too critical to see him for two weeks. By the time she was able to meet her baby, his condition had already deteriorated. He died on December 17, 2025, from injuries sustained in the crash.
Court records do not yet list a scheduled hearing date for Berry. Separately, Johnson’s family is reported to have pursued a civil case connected to the crash.
