A 13-year-old boy is dead after being lured out of his Washington, D.C., apartment by two individuals who were caught on a Ring camera waiting in the hallway outside his door.
Ahmad Mims lived on the 1600 block of Rosedale Street in the nation’s capital. On Saturday evening, someone knocked on his door and asked him to come outside. Security footage shows two young males standing in the hallway. Ahmad opened the door, saw them, closed it — and then looked back through the camera.
It was the last time his family saw him alive.
Sometime after stepping outside, Ahmad was shot once in the chest inside a nearby building. Metropolitan Police Department officers responded around 8:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a person shot. They found Ahmad unconscious and not breathing. He was pronounced dead within minutes.
What happened next shocked witnesses and family alike. According to court records, a witness saw Ahmad’s body being dragged from the front stairwell of a building to the sidewalk by a Black male wearing all-black clothing with a muscular build.
“To drag him out like a bag of trash — that just hurts me even more,” said his grandmother, Monica Mims, visibly emotional. “A little boy. To even drag someone outside after you shoot ’em.”
Witnesses told investigators they believe Ahmad was killed in retaliation for a physical altercation in which he reportedly hit the suspected shooter’s sister. His grandmother also confirmed Ahmad had been involved in a fight at school recently, though police have not publicly connected the two incidents.
MPD has confirmed the homicide investigation is ongoing and has not made any arrests.
