Lancaster, California — A heartbreaking child death case in Los Angeles County has taken another emotional turn as the former foster parent of a 2-year-old boy is mourning his loss, while the child’s grandfather continues to defend his daughter, who now faces a murder charge.
Authorities arrested Rayzhanna Greenhoward last week in connection with the death of her son, Legend, after investigators alleged the toddler died from severe burn injuries sustained during an incident at a Lancaster home in November.
Greenhoward remains in custody with bail set at $2 million as the criminal case moves forward.
Mother Faces Murder Charge After Toddler’s Death
According to homicide investigators, Legend died after suffering severe burns, although authorities have not publicly released additional details about how the injuries occurred.
Greenhoward was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday for her arraignment, but the hearing was postponed until early August after a judge stated she had experienced a mental health breakdown.
At this stage, prosecutors have charged her with murder, and the allegations remain subject to the ongoing court process.
Grandfather Says He Believes His Daughter Is Innocent
Despite the serious allegations, Greenhoward’s father, Raynard Greenhoward, says he continues to support his daughter and believes she did not intentionally harm her son.
Speaking publicly after her arrest, he recalled receiving a frantic phone call from her when Legend was injured.
“You’re innocent until proven guilty,” Raynard Greenhoward said.
He added:
“I’ve got faith that she didn’t do anything wrong.”
Recalling the day of the incident, he said his daughter told him:
“She says, ‘I’m taking the baby to the hospital.'”
Foster Parent Shares Heartbreak After Legend’s Death
For Yolanda Ramsey, the news of Legend’s death was especially devastating.
Ramsey cared for the toddler after he entered foster care shortly after birth and says she helped raise him during the first months of his life.
“I couldn’t believe it. I had to see his face first because that little bottom lip of his was just everything,” Ramsey said.
She explained that she welcomed Legend into her home when he was only days old.
“I had Legend for 9 months,” she said. “I picked him up from the hospital 10 days old.”
Ramsey declined to discuss why Legend had initially been placed in foster care but said she was heartbroken that after he was reunited with his mother, his life ended in tragedy.

Questions Raised About Child Welfare Oversight
While grieving the toddler’s death, Ramsey also expressed concerns about how child welfare cases are handled.
She believes more attention should be given to oversight involving children who are returned to family members after spending time in foster care.
“I think it goes back to the DCFS office,” Ramsey said. “It needs to be more looked at.”
Authorities have not released additional details about the investigation, and the criminal case against Greenhoward remains ongoing.
The allegations against the defendant have not been proven in court. Under the law, Rayzhanna Greenhoward is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
