A new grocery chain is making its debut in Northern Virginia this week, and the opening comes with a notable twist tied to a well-known retailer that previously occupied the same space.
Budget grocery chain Lidl is set to host a grand opening for its newest Falls Church location on Wednesday, August 12. The store will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and to mark the occasion, the first 100 customers through the door on opening day will receive gift cards ranging from $5 to $100. Additional perks include free product samples and branded giveaway items throughout the day.
The new location sits at 7511 Leesburg Pike, occupying part of a space that was previously home to a Whole Foods Market before that store closed its doors in February of last year. The remainder of the space is being filled out by other tenants, including South Block, Potbelly, and Qdoba, turning the former single-store site into a small multi-business retail hub.
While Lidl was originally founded in Germany, its U.S. operations are headquartered locally in Arlington, making this expansion something of a hometown milestone. The chain has built a reputation for offering affordable grocery staples, many under its own exclusive private labels, alongside a selection of familiar American brands.
Shoppers looking to explore the new store may want to pay particular attention to its bakery section, which has drawn praise for offering freshly baked bread and pastries at notably low prices.
This latest opening adds to a growing footprint for the chain in the region, which now includes more than 20 locations throughout Northern Virginia, among them a recently opened store in Herndon. The Falls Church debut marks another step in the chain’s continued expansion across the area, giving local shoppers one more budget-friendly option nearby.
