Dangerous Heat Is Coming for Kansas — Temperatures Could Hit 102°F Next Week and Forecasters Say the Worst Is Still Ahead

Wichita, Kansas- Central and south-central Kansas is facing a serious heat threat that forecasters say will peak early next week, with temperatures in some communities expected to exceed 100 degrees for the first time this summer.

Friday will bring a narrow window of relief — isolated thunderstorms are possible across southeast Kansas during the afternoon hours, capable of producing gusty winds, frequent lightning and brief heavy rain. However, storm activity is expected to diminish by evening, and any cooling effect will be short-lived.

The heat builds quickly from there. Highs will climb into the low-to-mid 90s Saturday before reaching the upper 90s by Sunday. Then comes the worst of it: Monday and Tuesday are forecast to bring 98 to 102 degree temperatures across a wide area including Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, Newton, El Dorado and Winfield.

Overnight temperatures will offer little relief, with lows settling into the lower to mid-70s — conditions that make it difficult for the body to recover from daytime heat exposure.

Meteorologists are watching the trend closely, and heat-related advisories could be issued if the extreme temperatures extend into the middle of next week.

Health officials urge residents to drink water consistently throughout the day, seek air-conditioned spaces during peak afternoon hours, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity between noon and 6 p.m. Neighbors are asked to check on elderly residents, young children and pets — groups that face the greatest risk during prolonged heat events.

Those without access to air conditioning should identify cooling centers in their area before temperatures spike this weekend.
