BOULDER, Colorado — Officers arrived to find a barefoot toddler standing on a second-floor balcony in nothing but a diaper, crying into the dark for someone to help her.
It was just after 10:30 p.m. on a Tuesday when a neighbor called 911 after hearing the child’s cries. When police got to the apartment, the front door was locked and no one answered.
So officers climbed a fence, got on top of their patrol cars, and pulled themselves up to the balcony to reach her.
What Police Found Inside
The little girl was physically unharmed — but the scene inside told a different story.
Officers discovered a large amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia sitting on a coffee table, well within reach of a 2-year-old.
When police tracked down her father by phone, he told them his daughter had been asleep when he left to get food. Then he refused to come back.
Officers changed the child’s diaper, helped her get dressed, and brought her to the police station where they looked after her until her mother was reached. She was then driven to her mom’s home in Denver.
Father Found at a Bar the Next Night
The following evening, police located the father at a Boulder bar.
He had nearly 15 grams of cocaine in his pockets and a large amount of cash on him when he was taken into custody. As officers cuffed him, body camera footage captured him saying, “Y’all are too good at your job, man.”
He has been arrested. Formal charges have not yet been announced.
“We’re glad this sweet child wasn’t hurt,” police said in a statement.
