Oakdale, California — A Northern California man has been arrested after authorities uncovered what officials described as a disturbing scene inside a residence where multiple deceased cats were found during an animal cruelty investigation.
The shocking discovery was made Wednesday after the Oakdale Police Department and Animal Control Officers responded to reports of dead animals inside a home on the 100 block of 6th Avenue. What officers encountered inside led to the tenant’s arrest on felony animal cruelty charges.
Officers Responded After Reports of Dead Animals
According to the Oakdale Police Department, officers were dispatched to the residence following concerns that deceased animals were inside the home.
When authorities arrived, they made contact with the tenant, who voluntarily allowed officers to enter the property.
During their initial inspection, investigators quickly discovered multiple deceased cats inside the residence.
“Upon arrival, Animal Control Officers and Oakdale Police Department patrol officers contacted the tenant of the residence. The tenant voluntarily consented to officers entering the home. During the initial walkthrough, officers observed several deceased cats inside the residence,” the Oakdale Police Department said in a news release.
Officials later confirmed that nine dead cats were recovered from the home.
Investigators Believe the Cats Had Been Dead for Weeks
As officers continued examining the property, investigators assessed the condition of the animals and estimated they had not recently died.
According to police, the cats are believed to have been deceased for approximately one to two weeks before they were discovered.
“Based on the condition of the animals, investigators believe the cats had been deceased for approximately one to two weeks,” the department stated.
Authorities have not publicly released additional details about what may have led to the animals’ deaths.
Tenant Arrested on Felony Animal Cruelty Charge
Following the investigation at the residence, officers arrested the tenant on felony animal cruelty charges.
Police have not yet released the suspect’s identity or indicated whether any additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
Officials also have not said whether any living animals were recovered from the property or whether further forensic examinations will be conducted.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
Animal cruelty investigations often involve cooperation between local law enforcement, animal control officers and veterinary experts to determine the cause of an animal’s death and whether criminal neglect or abuse occurred.
In this case, authorities continue to gather evidence from the residence while reviewing the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the nine cats.
The Oakdale Police Department has not announced when the suspect is expected to make an initial court appearance.
As investigators continue their work, officials are urging community members to report suspected cases of animal abuse or neglect so authorities can intervene before conditions become more severe.
