Springfield, Illinois — Buc-ee’s has become one of America’s most talked-about travel center chains, and as the company continues expanding into new states, many Illinois residents have been wondering whether the iconic roadside destination is finally heading to the Prairie State.
For now, however, it appears fans in Illinois will have to keep waiting.
The company recently addressed questions about a potential Illinois expansion but stopped short of confirming any future plans.
Buc-ee’s Has No Illinois Announcement
As excitement continues to build around the brand’s rapid expansion, Buc-ee’s was asked whether it has plans to open a location in Illinois.
A company spokesperson did not confirm any upcoming projects in the state.
“Thank you for reaching out. However, we have no comment at this time.”
While the response doesn’t completely rule out a future Illinois location, it also provides no indication that one is currently in development.
Unlike many convenience store chains, every Buc-ee’s location is owned and operated by the company, meaning independent franchise owners cannot simply open a store in Illinois.
That makes any expansion entirely dependent on Buc-ee’s corporate development plans.
New Stores Continue Opening Across the Country
Although Illinois isn’t currently on the expansion map, Buc-ee’s continues growing in other parts of the United States.
The company recently celebrated the opening of a new travel center in Goodyear, Arizona, marking another step in its expansion beyond its traditional Southern footprint.
In recent years, Buc-ee’s has also opened locations in:
- Ohio
- Colorado
- Virginia
The continued growth has fueled speculation about which state could be next.
New Locations Will Be Closer for Illinois Drivers
Even without an Illinois store, Buc-ee’s will soon become much more accessible for many residents.
Company plans call for two new locations near Indianapolis, including a proposed store in Greenwood, Indiana.
Both Indiana sites would be located along Interstate 65, making them convenient stops for travelers heading south or east.
Another highly anticipated location is under construction in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, approximately 20 miles south of Milwaukee.
Once it opens next year, it will become the closest Buc-ee’s location to Chicago, sitting less than 100 miles away.
For many northern Illinois residents, that could make day trips to Buc-ee’s much more practical than traveling to existing stores in Kentucky or Missouri.
Why Buc-ee’s Has Become a Road Trip Favorite
Founded in Texas during the 1980s, Buc-ee’s has transformed from a regional convenience store into one of the country’s most recognizable travel destinations.
The chain is known for its enormous travel centers featuring:
- Dozens of fuel pumps
- Fresh barbecue and hot food
- Homemade snacks and desserts
- Exclusive Buc-ee’s merchandise
- Exceptionally large and clean restrooms
Its growing popularity has made each new store announcement a major topic of conversation among road trip enthusiasts.

Could Illinois Eventually Get a Buc-ee’s?
While Buc-ee’s isn’t confirming any Illinois expansion plans today, the company’s steady growth into neighboring states suggests it continues looking at new markets.
With stores already operating in Missouri and Kentucky and additional locations coming to Indiana and Wisconsin, Illinois will soon be surrounded by Buc-ee’s travel centers.
Whether the Land of Lincoln eventually joins that list remains unknown, but many fans will undoubtedly continue watching for future announcements.
