A 21-year-old Phoenix man’s birthday celebration turned into a nightmare for his family after he was shot and killed by a stranger during a heated confrontation at a gas station, according to police.
Julio Angel Osife Diaz had spent the night celebrating his birthday with loved ones before heading to his uncle’s house in the early hours of July 18. On his way, he stopped at a gas station near 16th Street and Thomas Road, a decision that would cost him his life.
Police say officers responded to the location shortly before 2:30 a.m. after reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found Osife Diaz suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Investigators identified the shooter as 22-year-old Jaheime Rashard Brown, who remained at the scene and was taken into custody. He now faces a second-degree murder charge.
According to detectives, Brown approached Osife Diaz at the gas station and confronted him without any prior relationship between the two men. The confrontation escalated quickly, and police allege Brown opened fire, killing Osife Diaz on the spot. Authorities have not disclosed what triggered the argument, but relatives believe Osife Diaz was trying to protect his girlfriend when the shooting occurred.
Family members described him as a devoted son who loved basketball and held close to his traditions. His mother said he was someone who “would never cause harm onto anybody” and had just been starting to build his life.
Grieving relatives say the loss has left a permanent void, comparing their pain to a lifelong sentence with no chance of relief. They say they are hoping the courts deliver justice, even as they struggle to accept that ordinary moments, like hearing him say good morning, are now gone forever.
The case remains under investigation as it moves through the legal system.
