ESPARTO, California — One moment, it was a quiet Friday night in Yolo County. The next, a single vehicle left the road — and the consequences reached far beyond the crash site.
The California Highway Patrol responded to a collision along County Road 85, just outside Esparto near the Capay area. A vehicle had struck a power pole. When first responders arrived, one person was dead.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released. The Yolo County Coroner’s Office was on scene as investigators worked to piece together what happened.
Three Poles Down, Thousands Left in the Dark
The crash did not just claim a life. It tore through the local power grid.
Three power poles were knocked down in the collision. The damage sent a wave of outages across the surrounding area — at its worst, more than 2,000 customers lost electricity on a Friday night.
PG&E crews responded quickly and worked to restore service. By late Friday night, power had come back for the majority of those affected. But 131 customers were still without electricity, with a full restoration target of 11:30 p.m.

Road Closed as Investigation Continues
County Road 85 was shut down in both directions following the crash, adding disruption to an already difficult night for the area.
The California Highway Patrol has not yet determined the cause of the collision. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.
