BEAVERTON, Oregon — She had done something completely ordinary. She showed up at her boyfriend’s apartment and asked for a ride home.
She never made it.
At around 4:50 a.m. on November 21, 2024, 16-year-old girl was inside Sky Alexander Korbut’s apartment on Southwest Prairie Terrace when the night took a horrifying turn.
Korbut, then 20, was cleaning his room. He placed a gun on a dog kennel and showed it to her. She told him to get it out of her face and slapped it away.
Seconds later, he pulled the trigger.
“Help Me, Mama”
Shot in the stomach, the girl grabbed her phone.
“I got shot,” she texted her mother. Then — “Mama.” Then — “Plz.” Then — “Help me.”
Her mother had just sent a message asking where she was. She had no idea what was happening on the other end.
Korbut called 911 and told dispatchers he had “accidentally” shot his girlfriend. Officers arrived to find her with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.
The bullet had torn through her intestines, gallbladder, liver, and pancreas. Doctors told her family she might not survive. She needed 20 liters of blood.
She survived.
The Truth Came Out
Korbut initially claimed it was an accident. But as investigators dug deeper, the victim’s own statements told a different story — one that contradicted his account entirely.
Charges were upgraded from third-degree to second-degree assault.
He also admitted he had purchased the Smith & Wesson handgun illegally from someone on the street after failing a background check.
In April, a jury found him guilty. He was sentenced to nearly six years in the Oregon Department of Corrections.
A teenage girl asked her boyfriend for a ride home. He shot her. And somehow, he will be out in six years.
