A Garden Grove teenager is now facing homicide charges after his 17-year-old girlfriend died from severe head injuries she suffered during what police describe as a physical altercation between the two over the weekend.
According to authorities, officers were dispatched to a residential block on Hewitt Place late Sunday night after receiving reports of a woman bleeding heavily from her head. When police arrived, they found the young victim in critical condition, with serious injuries to her head area. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries the following day.
The victim has been identified as Janely Gutierrez, 17. Investigators say she lived with her boyfriend, 18-year-old Ethan Vidal, at the time of the incident.
During the course of the investigation, detectives spoke with Vidal, who admitted that the two had been involved in a physical dispute shortly before Gutierrez sustained her fatal injuries. He was taken into custody at the scene and has since been booked on suspicion of attempted homicide, a charge that could be upgraded now that the victim has died.
Police have not released further details about what led to the altercation, citing the need to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation. Officials have asked the community for patience as detectives continue working to piece together the exact sequence of events, while also extending support to the grieving family during this time.
