JENNINGS COUNTY, Indiana — A family in southern Indiana is devastated after a violent storm tore through their neighborhood Tuesday and stole something no parent should ever lose.
Just before 3:30 p.m., a large tree fell onto a single-family home in Geneva Township. It landed directly on the bedroom at the back of the house — where a 4-year-old boy was inside.
The child was trapped beneath the debris. Despite efforts to reach him, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three other people who were inside the home at the time managed to escape without physical injury. But no one inside that house walked away unharmed in the ways that truly matter.
A Home in the Woods, a Storm With No Warning
The home sat in a heavily wooded neighborhood — the kind of setting that feels peaceful until nature turns.
Jennings County Deputy Chief Cody Low said the trees came down due to powerful winds and storms moving rapidly through the area. There was little time to prepare and no time to react.
A second tree also fell on another home a couple of miles away around the same time, causing structural damage. No one was injured in that incident.
“Pray for This Family”
Deputy Chief Low did not hide the weight of what his department faced when they arrived on scene.
“Pray,” he said. “Pray for the family. This is obviously unexpected. Pray for the first responders that have to go through it. It’s a bad situation.”
He added that no words could ease the pain — but the community would not let the family face it alone.
“We’re going to push through this as a community. We’re going to back the family and anything they need. Our thoughts are with them.”
A little boy went to sleep in his room on a Tuesday afternoon. He never got the chance to wake up. His family — and an entire county — is now left to carry that.
