MARIETTA, Georgia — A desperate search for a missing toddler ended in the worst way imaginable Friday evening, leaving a community heartbroken and investigators with more questions than answers.
Messiah Harris, just 2 years old, was reported missing from the Briggs at Powers Park apartment complex on Ridge Run, just off Franklin Parkway, at around 1:30 p.m. He was last seen wearing blue and white striped pajamas.
When officers arrived at 2 p.m., something felt off immediately.
Caregiver’s Story Didn’t Add Up
Marietta Police Department spokesperson Chuck McPhilamy said the statements given by the male caregiver watching Messiah at the time did not hold together.
“The statements that were made just didn’t make sense or weren’t consistent, causing investigators to be concerned,” McPhilamy said.
Messiah’s mother was not home at the time of his disappearance. Police have not confirmed the caregiver’s exact relationship to the family.
Body Found Hours Later
As the afternoon turned to evening, multiple agencies joined the search across the surrounding area.
At approximately 7:20 p.m., Messiah’s body was found in the wood line near the apartment complex. Officers said his body had been there for a considerable amount of time.
He would have turned 3 years old in just two weeks.
“This is the worst ending that we possibly could have asked for,” McPhilamy said.
Investigation Ongoing
The medical examiner is now working to determine the cause and exact timeline of death. Police have not confirmed whether foul play was involved, and no charges have been announced.
Both the mother and the caregiver are currently being interviewed by investigators.
