But National Weather Service meteorologists have now confirmed the truth: it wasn’t a tornado that caused the widespread devastation. It was something far less understood — and equally deadly.
Survey teams determined that the catastrophic damage across Monee, Beecher, Crete, Flossmoor, and surrounding communities was caused primarily by straight-line thunderstorm winds reaching 80 to 100 mph. While brief tornadoes did touch down within the storm system, the overwhelming destruction across a broad swath of neighborhoods resulted from a massive corridor of non-tornadic winds — the kind most people don’t take seriously enough.
That’s exactly what meteorologists want to change.
Unlike tornadoes, which carve narrow, concentrated paths, straight-line winds fan out across miles of terrain, pushing trees and debris in a single direction. The damage looks messier, more widespread — and it can level everything in its path just as effectively.
Forecasters explained that when a severe thunderstorm warning is issued for winds exceeding 80 mph, residents must treat it with the same urgency as a tornado warning. There is no “safe” category of violent storm. If either warning is issued, the immediate action is the same: move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and stay there.
Officials emphasized that documentation from the July 27 event is still ongoing, and additional storm surveys may reveal further damage as meteorologists finalize their findings from one of the most powerful severe thunderstorm events to strike the Chicago metropolitan area this summer.
The message is clear: when the next severe thunderstorm warning is issued, don’t wait to find out what kind of storm it is.
