Fort Worth, Texas — A dangerous heat event is gripping North and Central Texas, with heat index values climbing as high as 110 degrees across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex — and health officials say most people are putting themselves at risk without even realizing it.
A Heat Advisory remains in effect through Thursday evening for millions of residents across the region, including Dallas-Fort Worth, Waco, Sherman, Paris, Killeen, Palestine, Graham, Canton and surrounding communities.
Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach between 97 and 102 degrees. But it is not just the thermometer that tells the full story — humidity is pushing what the air actually feels like into dangerous territory, with heat index readings between 105 and 110 degrees across much of the area.
The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex faces the harshest conditions, with temperatures near 101 degrees feeling as hot as 109 degrees. Sherman is forecast to reach 101 degrees with a heat index near 108, while Waco tops out around 100 degrees, feeling closer to 107. Graham could climb to 102 degrees, and communities from Killeen to Palestine will also experience oppressive conditions through the late afternoon hours.
Officials warn that the window between late morning and early evening carries the greatest risk. Residents should stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, drink water consistently throughout the day — even before feeling thirsty — and wear loose, lightweight clothing if going outside is unavoidable.
Neighbors are urged to check on elderly residents, young children, and anyone without reliable access to air conditioning. Pet owners should ensure animals have shade and fresh water at all times.
The Heat Advisory is expected to remain in effect through Thursday evening. Officials have not ruled out additional heat warnings if dangerous conditions persist into the coming days.
