DELRAY BEACH, FL — A 79-year-old woman from Delray Beach has passed away nearly three weeks after a car accident that initially seemed survivable, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials say Marlene Balzano was behind the wheel of a 2015 Ford Fusion, heading east through the Monterey Lakes neighborhood just after midnight on June 6. As she attempted a left turn, her vehicle drifted out of its lane and veered off the paved road, ultimately slamming into a tree. The impact was severe enough to trigger the car’s airbags and leave the vehicle with substantial damage.
Despite the force of the collision, first responders on scene initially assessed Balzano’s injuries as minor. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue transported her to Delray Medical Center for treatment, and at the time, there was no indication the crash would turn fatal.
That changed more than two weeks later. On June 24, Balzano succumbed to complications tied to blunt force trauma she had sustained in the wreck, the sheriff’s office confirmed. Her death now links back directly to the June 6 crash, even though she had survived the initial impact and appeared to be recovering.
The case highlights how injuries that seem manageable in the immediate aftermath of a crash can quietly worsen over time, sometimes with fatal results weeks later. Investigators have not released additional details about what may have caused Balzano to drift out of her lane during the turn, and no further updates on the circumstances of the crash have been made public.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has not indicated whether any further investigation is ongoing.
