A quiet Sunday afternoon in Wadsworth turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy when a moped carrying two riders was violently struck by a car, sending both victims flying onto the roadway with critical injuries.
At approximately 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, Lake County Sheriff’s deputies rushed to the intersection of Delany Road and August Zupec Drive after reports of a serious crash with injuries. What they found upon arrival painted a grim picture — a heavily damaged Honda 150 moped lying in the road, and two unconscious riders sprawled on the pavement.
What Happened in Those Final Seconds
According to the preliminary investigation, a 35-year-old man was operating the moped northbound on Delany Road, with a 32-year-old woman riding as his passenger. As the pair approached August Zupec Drive and slowed to make a left turn, a Chevrolet Malibu traveling directly behind them made a sudden, dangerous move.
The Malibu’s driver — a 24-year-old woman — abruptly swerved into the southbound lane to pass, striking the moped just as it was beginning its turn. The impact was brutal. Both the driver and his passenger were violently thrown from the moped onto the road.
Critical Condition, No Answers Yet
Emergency responders rushed both victims to a nearby hospital. As of the latest update, the 35-year-old moped driver and his 32-year-old passenger remain in critical, life-threatening condition.
The driver and passenger of the Chevrolet Malibu — aged 24 and 49 — walked away from the crash without any injuries.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team has taken over the case and the investigation is actively ongoing. No charges have been announced at this time.
