St. Augustine, Florida — A 28-year-old Mexican national was killed Tuesday morning after being struck by a tractor-trailer while reportedly attempting to flee from federal immigration officers during an enforcement operation in northeast Florida, authorities said.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred shortly after 7 a.m. near State Road 16 in St. Johns County, where immigration officers were conducting an operation in the area.
Officials said the fatal collision remains under investigation by state and federal authorities.
ICE Encounter Began at Gas Station, Officials Say
Authorities said four individuals were stopped in the parking lot of a gas station in St. Augustine when they were approached by officers involved in the immigration operation.
According to Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Dylan Bryan, the group attempted to flee after the encounter.
Investigators said the 28-year-old Mexican national ran across State Road 16, where he was struck by an oncoming tractor-trailer.
The man’s identity has not been publicly released.
Driver Tried to Help After Collision
Officials said the driver of the tractor-trailer immediately stopped after the crash and attempted to provide medical assistance to the injured man.
Despite those efforts, the victim could not be saved and was pronounced dead.
Authorities have not indicated that the truck driver is suspected of any wrongdoing in connection with the fatal collision.
DHS Confirms Investigation Is Ongoing
In a brief statement, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that immigration officers were conducting an operation in the area at the time of the incident.
The agency identified the deceased only as a Mexican national, adding that no information about his immigration status was immediately available.
DHS said both the Florida Highway Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
Officials added that additional information will be released as it becomes available.
Incident Follows Other Recent Fatal Encounters
The Florida incident comes amid increased attention on several recent deaths connected to immigration enforcement operations across the United States.
Authorities have separately reported fatal encounters involving immigration officers in Texas and Maine in recent days. Those incidents remain under investigation, and the circumstances surrounding each case differ.
Officials have not suggested that the Florida crash is connected to any of those separate investigations.
