Florida Roommate Shooting Leaves One Dead; Suspect Claimed Self-Defense Before Alleged Admission to Police

Miami, Florida — A Florida man is facing a murder charge after police say he fatally shot his roommate during a heated argument inside their shared home before later asking investigators a chilling question during an interview.

According to an arrest affidavit, Jermaine Carol Grant, 32, was arrested after the fatal shooting of 38-year-old Xavier Pringle on Saturday night. Authorities say Grant is being held without bond following his first court appearance.

Police responded to reports of gunfire at a Miami residence and found Pringle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. First responders immediately began life-saving efforts before transporting him to a hospital, where he later died.

Police Say Victim Was Carrying a BB Gun

When officers arrived, they noticed what appeared to be a weapon in Pringle’s waistband.

However, investigators later confirmed that the weapon was a BB gun, not a firearm. Police also recovered multiple spent shell casings from the scene and launched a homicide investigation.

According to court documents, officers later executed a search warrant at the home and reportedly found blood near the entrance, the BB gun on a kitchen counter, a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield handgun, shell casings and several projectiles believed to be connected to the shooting.

Witnesses Described Growing Tension Inside the Home

Investigators interviewed two people who were inside the residence at the time of the shooting, including Pringle’s girlfriend.

One witness reportedly told officers that tensions between Grant and Pringle had been “boiling up” since Pringle moved into the home.

According to the affidavit, Pringle’s girlfriend said the confrontation began after Grant accused Pringle of splashing water on him while breaking ice in the kitchen.

She told investigators the two argued before she and another witness stepped outside. Moments later, they heard five to six gunshots and rushed back inside, where they found Pringle lying unresponsive on the kitchen floor.

The other witness reportedly began performing chest compressions while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.

Surveillance Footage and Interview Become Key Evidence

Police said the property’s owner provided Ring camera footage from inside the home.

According to investigators, the video allegedly shows Grant firing toward the area where Pringle was later found. Officers also said audio captured Grant shouting:

“He got a gun on him.”

During a police interview, Grant allegedly claimed he believed Pringle was carrying a real firearm and feared for his life.

According to the affidavit, Grant admitted that although Pringle had a weapon in his possession, he never pointed it at him.

Grant reportedly told investigators he believed, “It’s me or him, I guess,” and also complained about ongoing tension inside the home after Pringle moved in.

“You can’t come in and dominate the house,” Grant allegedly told police.

Murder Charge Filed Following Investigation

According to investigators, Grant allegedly ended the interview by asking officers:

“I over-killed him, right?”

Following the investigation, authorities charged Grant with second-degree murder with a deadly weapon.

He is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond. Court records indicate his next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.

The investigation into the fatal shooting remains ongoing as prosecutors prepare to move forward with the case.
