Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — Two young children were removed from what authorities described as an unsafe and uninhabitable home in Philadelphia after investigators reportedly found them living in squalid conditions alongside dozens of animals, including several that were deceased.
The disturbing discovery was made Tuesday, July 7, when federal authorities executed a search warrant at the residence. The investigation has since prompted a child welfare inquiry and criminal charges against the children’s parents.
Children Taken to Hospital After Disturbing Discovery
According to reports, the children—a 5-year-old and an 8-month-old infant—were found inside the home during the search.
Authorities said the residence was in “squalid” conditions, with the Philadelphia Police Department describing the property as unsafe and uninhabitable.
Following their rescue, both children were transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation. Officials have not released information about their medical condition or whether they suffered any injuries.
The Philadelphia Police Department’s Special Victims Unit is now investigating the children’s welfare.
Dozens of Animals Removed From the Property
During the several-hour investigation, the Pennsylvania SPCA’s law enforcement team removed 38 cats and one dog from the home.
Authorities also discovered multiple deceased animals inside the residence, adding to concerns about the living conditions.
Investigators wearing hazmat suits were seen examining the property as they collected evidence. The home was later boarded up while officials continued processing the scene.
The presence of hazardous conditions prompted additional city agencies to respond during the investigation.
Multiple Agencies Assisted at the Scene
Officials said the Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections and Philadelphia Gas Works also responded to the residence.
As part of the response, gas service to the home was shut off while authorities evaluated the property’s safety.
Neighbors said they had long been concerned about conditions at the home.
One nearby resident, Vex Holmquist, described the property as having “a horrible stench,” according to local reports.
The investigation involved local police, federal authorities, animal welfare officers and city inspectors working together throughout the day.
Parents Face Child Endangerment Charges
Authorities confirmed that the parents of the two children were taken into custody and charged with child endangerment following the investigation.
Officials have not released additional details about the federal search warrant or whether more criminal charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
Law enforcement has also not disclosed the identities of the parents or the children.
The case remains under active investigation as authorities continue examining the conditions inside the residence and determining whether additional legal action will be taken.
Anyone who suspects child abuse or neglect is encouraged to report concerns through the appropriate authorities or child protection resources available in their community.
