Plano, Texas — A Texas mother has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after a jury found her guilty of murder in the death of her 15-month-old son, who prosecutors said was left alone inside a hot vehicle for hours while she worked at a local spa.
The case stems from an incident on Aug. 16, 2025, when authorities say Vanessa Esquivel, 28, intentionally left her toddler inside her vehicle on a day when temperatures reached 96 degrees. According to investigators, she was aware that the vehicle’s air conditioning was not working before leaving the child inside.
Police Say Toddler Was Left Alone During Mother’s Work Shift
According to court records and investigators, Esquivel arrived for her shift at Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa around 1:45 p.m. and allegedly left her son alone inside the parked vehicle.
Police said she remained inside the business for approximately two and a half hours, providing massage services to clients during her scheduled shift.
Investigators interviewed coworkers, who reportedly told police that Esquivel did not bring the child inside the spa and did not return to the vehicle until her shift ended at approximately 4:15 p.m.
Authorities said the prolonged exposure to extreme heat proved fatal for the toddler.
Child Was Pronounced Dead After Arrival at Hospital
After returning to the vehicle, Esquivel drove her son toward Medical City Plano Hospital.
However, according to investigators, she stopped at a McDonald’s restaurant before arriving at the emergency room.
Hospital staff told police the child had already died by the time he arrived at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Medical personnel determined the toddler’s body temperature was 106 degrees, consistent with severe heat exposure.
Investigators said Esquivel initially told hospital staff that her son had become ill while she had been driving him around in a vehicle without working air conditioning.
Investigation Revealed Different Timeline
When questioned by officers at the hospital, Esquivel allegedly claimed she had been with her son throughout the day.
However, investigators became suspicious after noticing she was still wearing her work uniform.
Police later confirmed through coworkers that she had worked her scheduled shift while the child remained outside in the vehicle.
According to the arrest affidavit, investigators also learned that Esquivel stopped to order food at McDonald’s before reaching the hospital, a detail that became part of the criminal investigation.
The following day, police said Esquivel contacted a coworker and explained that she had been unable to find anyone to watch her son before work.
She reportedly told the coworker that she had left the toddler in the vehicle with the air conditioner running, despite investigators later determining the air conditioning system was not functioning.
Authorities also alleged that Esquivel asked the coworker not to share details of their conversation because she was under investigation.
Jury Convicts Mother of Murder
Following the investigation and trial, a jury found Vanessa Esquivel guilty of murder on June 16.
She was subsequently sentenced to 25 years in prison for her role in the death of her 15-month-old son.
The heartbreaking case has renewed attention on the dangers of leaving children inside parked vehicles during hot weather, where temperatures can rise rapidly even over a short period of time, creating life-threatening conditions.
