Mother of NFL Star Calais Campbell Found Dead in Atlanta Home; Brother Charged With Murder

Atlanta, Georgia — The family of Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell is mourning the loss of its matriarch after his mother was found dead inside her Atlanta home, while his older brother has been charged in connection with her death.

Authorities say Nateal Campbell, 71, was discovered unresponsive inside her Buckhead townhouse on Tuesday afternoon after concerned relatives requested a welfare check when they were unable to reach her.

The tragic discovery has shocked both the Campbell family and the football community as investigators continue working to determine exactly what happened.

Welfare Check Leads to Grim Discovery

According to Atlanta police, officers responded to a residence on the 3500 block of Roswell Road NW shortly after 12:30 p.m. following concerns raised by family members.

When officers arrived, they encountered an unexpected situation after learning that a man had barricaded himself inside the home.

Police entered the residence, took the individual into custody, and found Nateal Campbell unresponsive inside the townhouse.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not publicly released additional information about the circumstances surrounding her death as the investigation continues.

Brother Charged With Murder

The individual taken into custody was later identified as Ciarre Campbell, 41, the older brother of Calais Campbell.

According to Fulton County Jail records, he has been charged with:

  • Murder
  • Aggravated Assault
  • Possession of a Firearm or Knife During the Commission of a Felony

Ciarre Campbell previously played football at Colorado State University before his younger brother went on to build a lengthy NFL career.

Investigators have not disclosed a possible motive or detailed the evidence supporting the charges.

Defense attorney Jay Abt said authorities have obtained search warrants involving the Buckhead residence, clothing, and DNA evidence as part of the investigation.

Police Cite Previous Calls to Home

Officials confirmed that law enforcement had previously responded to the residence in connection with other incidents.

According to Atlanta police, officers were called to the home earlier this year regarding concerns involving a possible mental health issue.

Lt. Christopher Butler said records also showed an earlier response connected to a possible arson investigation at the same location.

“There have been some indications of possibly some mental health issues with an individual,” Butler said.

Authorities have not confirmed whether Ciarre Campbell was living with his mother at the time of the incident.

The investigation remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence.

Family Asks for Privacy

In a statement shared through NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Campbell family expressed heartbreak over the loss of Nateal Campbell while asking the public to respect their privacy.

“We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell.”

The family added:

“While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”

Calais Campbell’s Legacy Beyond Football

Calais Campbell has built one of the NFL’s most respected careers since being selected in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft out of the University of Miami.

A six-time Pro Bowl selection, Campbell was also recognized as the 2025 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year for his extensive charitable work.

Together with his mother and siblings, he helped establish the Charles Richard Campbell Foundation, named in honor of his late father. The organization focuses on mentoring young people and teaching critical life skills within local communities.

As investigators continue their work, the Campbell family is mourning the loss of a woman remembered not only as the heart of their family but also as a driving force behind years of community service and philanthropy.
