Washington, D.C. — A woman who fled a routine traffic stop at speeds reaching nearly 100 mph has been sentenced to nearly three decades in prison after causing a devastating crash that killed a Lyft driver and his two passengers.
The deadly collision, which occurred in March 2023, claimed the lives of three men who prosecutors said were simply trying to get home safely after a night out. This week, the case reached its conclusion as a judge handed down a 29-year prison sentence to the driver responsible for the crash.
High-Speed Chase Ended in Deadly Collision
According to federal prosecutors, Nakita Walker, 45, spent the evening with friends before driving home shortly after midnight on March 14, 2023.
Authorities said Walker was speeding and ran a red light in front of a police officer, who initiated a traffic stop.
Investigators said Walker initially pulled over but suddenly drove away before officers could complete the stop.
Prosecutors told the court she accelerated to speeds of up to 100 mph along Rock Creek Parkway while attempting to escape law enforcement.
During the pursuit, officials said Walker crossed the double-yellow center line and crashed head-on into another vehicle.
Lyft Driver and Two Passengers Killed
The vehicle struck by Walker was being driven by 42-year-old Mohamed Kamara, who was working as a Lyft driver that night.
According to prosecutors, Kamara regularly drove for Lyft to help support family members in Sierra Leone.
His passengers, 23-year-old Jonathan Alberto Cabrera Mendez and 22-year-old Olvin Josue Torres Velasquez, were returning to Arlington, Virginia, after spending the evening out together.
All three men died as a result of the collision.
The tragedy devastated multiple families whose loved ones never made it home.
Prosecutors Presented Evidence of Impairment
Investigators testified that Walker’s blood-alcohol concentration measured 0.10, above the legal limit. Authorities also said cannabis was detected in her system following the crash.
During the trial, prosecutors presented testimony from emergency responders who treated Walker after the collision.
One paramedic testified that Walker appeared to be laughing and acting excited while being transported for medical treatment.
Defense attorneys argued that her behavior may have been influenced by serious injuries she suffered during the crash, including broken bones and head trauma.
Judge Hands Down 29-Year Prison Sentence
Earlier this year, Walker was convicted on:
- Three counts of involuntary manslaughter
- Fleeing a law enforcement officer
- Assault with a dangerous weapon
This week, she was sentenced to 29 years in federal prison. During sentencing, Walker addressed the victims’ families and accepted responsibility for her actions.
“Today I take accountability for what happened,” she told the court.
“I pray for forgiveness because their lives mattered, too. I don’t have any excuses.”
Prosecutors said the sentence reflects the devastating consequences of reckless driving and fleeing from police.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said:
“Three lives were lost because of Nakita Walker’s reckless and violent choices. Their families now carry a grief that can never fully heal.”
Families Continue Living With the Loss
While the criminal case has concluded, the impact of the crash continues to be felt by the families and loved ones of the three victims.
Kamara is remembered for working tirelessly to support relatives overseas, while Mendez and Velasquez had simply been enjoying an evening together before calling a Lyft to return home safely.
The case serves as another reminder of the tragic consequences that can result from impaired and reckless driving, particularly when motorists attempt to flee from law enforcement.
