28-Year-Old Man Killed in Crocodile Attack at Popular Mexico Beach as California Family Rushes to Save Him

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico — A relaxing evening at one of Mexico’s most popular beach destinations turned tragic after a 28-year-old man was killed in a crocodile attack while vacationers watched in horror and rushed to help.

The fatal incident unfolded Friday evening at Marina Vallarta Beach, near the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort and Spa, where a California family made a desperate attempt to rescue the victim after hearing cries for help coming from the shoreline.

Authorities later recovered the man’s body early the following morning.

California Family Rushed to Help After Hearing Screams

According to witnesses, the attack occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. near the beach in Puerto Vallarta’s Marina Vallarta area.

Jamie Yetter, her fiancé Chris Bury, and her teenage daughter were relaxing by the hotel pool when they suddenly heard someone screaming from the water.

Initially believing someone had been caught in a dangerous rip current, the family immediately rushed toward the beach.

Yetter said her fiancé wasted no time trying to reach the struggling man.

“We thought we saw a guy stuck in a rip current, so Chris took off down to the water, and I ran right after him.”

Desperate Rescue Attempt Falls Short

With no emergency rescue equipment readily available, Bury grabbed an unattended kayak in hopes of reaching the victim.

However, the kayak had no paddles, making the rescue even more difficult.

“There were no oars. There was really nothing at the beach at all to help. We were just scrambling, trying to do what we could,” Bury said.

As he attempted to get closer, the victim disappeared beneath the water.

“I was on the kayak right when he got pulled under.”

Despite their efforts, the family was unable to save the man.

Authorities later identified the victim only as a 28-year-old man from Mexico who had been in Puerto Vallarta for work.

His body was recovered approximately 12 hours later during a search operation.

Warning Signs Were Posted Near the Beach

Following the tragedy, Yetter said warning signs had been posted in the area alerting visitors to potential wildlife hazards.

The signs included warnings about jellyfish, stingrays, and crocodiles in nearby waters.

However, the family admitted they initially misunderstood the crocodile warning.

According to Yetter, they mistakenly believed the animal pictured on the sign was an iguana rather than a crocodile.

The misunderstanding has raised questions about whether warning signs are clear enough for international visitors unfamiliar with local wildlife.

Beach Reopened as Investigation Continues

By Saturday morning, beachgoers had once again returned to the shoreline, with families seen swimming in the same waters where the fatal attack had occurred just hours earlier.

The incident also took place near the location of another crocodile encounter in 2022, when two tourists from Colorado were injured during an attack in the Puerto Vallarta area.

Local authorities continue investigating the latest incident.

The Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort and Spa has not publicly commented on the attack.

Officials have not announced whether additional safety measures or beach restrictions will be implemented following the tragedy.

Wildlife Risks Remain a Concern

Puerto Vallarta’s beaches attract thousands of visitors each year, but wildlife experts have long warned that crocodiles naturally inhabit nearby rivers, lagoons, and estuaries that connect to coastal waters.

While attacks remain uncommon, authorities routinely advise visitors to pay close attention to posted warning signs and avoid entering areas where crocodile activity has been reported.

The fatal attack serves as a tragic reminder that natural wildlife hazards can exist even at popular tourist destinations.
