Johnson County, Texas — A 7-year-old North Texas boy is being recognized for his extraordinary bravery after his quick thinking helped save the life of his 1-year-old brother who was found unresponsive in a swimming pool.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said Patrick’s actions played a crucial role in the rescue, earning him praise from deputies and a nomination for one of the department’s highest civilian recognitions.
Officials say the incident serves as a powerful reminder that courage and presence of mind can make a life-saving difference, regardless of age.
Young Brother Reacted Immediately After Finding Toddler in Pool
According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a home on Ketron Road in Burleson after being called to assist paramedics treating a young child involved in a possible drowning.
Authorities said 1-year-old Liam was found unresponsive in a swimming pool before emergency crews arrived.
Investigators later learned that Patrick, Liam’s 7-year-old brother, was the first to discover the toddler in the water.
Without hesitation, Patrick pulled his younger brother from the pool, alerted his mother to the emergency, and then ran to a nearby home to get additional help.
His quick actions helped set in motion the emergency response that ultimately saved Liam’s life.
Paramedics Stabilized Toddler Before Hospital Transport
Emergency medical personnel arrived shortly after being notified and immediately began treating Liam.
Officials said paramedics successfully stabilized the toddler before transporting him to Cook Children’s Medical Center for further care.
Authorities expect Liam to make a full recovery.
Investigators credited the rapid sequence of events—including Patrick’s immediate response—for helping improve the child’s chances of survival.
Sheriff’s Office Praises 7-Year-Old’s Courage
Following the incident, deputies spoke highly of Patrick’s calm response during an incredibly stressful situation.
Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Keven George said the young boy displayed remarkable maturity while responding to the emergency.
“In moments of crisis, even adults can freeze under pressure,” JCSO Lt. Keven George wrote. “Patrick did the opposite. He remained focused, acted with urgency, and demonstrated a level of courage, awareness, and determination far beyond his years. His actions played a critical role in the chain of events that helped save his brother’s life.”
Officials said Patrick’s ability to stay calm under pressure made a significant difference during the emergency.
Sheriff’s Commendation Award Recommended
To recognize his bravery, deputies have nominated Patrick for a Sheriff’s Commendation Award.
The nomination will be reviewed by a committee during its next meeting. If approved, Patrick will receive both the commendation and a commemorative pin honoring his actions.
The sheriff’s office said it hopes Patrick’s story inspires others throughout the community.
“Our entire Sheriff’s Office family is incredibly proud of Patrick,” George wrote. “Patrick, your actions made a difference when it mattered most. You stayed calm, acted quickly, and helped save a life. We are proud of you, and we thank you for setting such an incredible example for our community.”
A Reminder About Water Safety
While officials celebrated Liam’s expected recovery and Patrick’s heroic actions, the incident also highlights the importance of water safety around young children.
Experts consistently recommend close adult supervision, pool barriers, swimming lessons when age-appropriate, and learning CPR to help reduce the risk of drowning emergencies.
In this case, authorities say one young boy’s courage, quick thinking, and determination helped save his little brother’s life and turned what could have been a tragedy into an inspiring story of heroism.
