Last year’s Fourth of July celebrations were overshadowed when illegal fireworks allegedly sparked a fire that destroyed the historic Templeton Feed & Grain building.
Prosecutors later charged an adult man and a 16-year-old boy, alleging they traveled to Bakersfield to purchase illegal fireworks before bringing them back to San Luis Obispo County.
More recently, in July 2025, a massive explosion at a fireworks warehouse in Yolo County killed seven workers, injured two others, and ignited a 78-acre wildfire.
Authorities said large quantities of unregulated fireworks had been stored at the facility before the explosion.
Officials say those incidents underscore why preventing illegal fireworks sales remains a priority.
