Nashville, Tennessee — A 12-year-old boy lost his life after gunfire erupted during a large fight near Nashville’s theater district, prompting a homicide investigation and the arrest of a suspected shooter.
The shooting occurred Sunday night near one of downtown Nashville’s busiest cultural areas, leaving a young victim dead and raising renewed concerns about violence in public spaces.
Police have since arrested a 24-year-old man who investigators believe opened fire during the confrontation.
Fight Breaks Out Near Theater District
According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, the incident unfolded at the intersection of Representative John Lewis Way and Deaderick Street, an area located adjacent to the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.
Investigators said a fight involving approximately six to seven individuals broke out shortly before the shooting.
During the altercation, authorities allege that Devin Orr, 24, retrieved a handgun from his waistband as tensions escalated.
Police say several people involved in the dispute began running away after the weapon was displayed.

12-Year-Old Victim Dies From Injuries
Authorities identified the victim as Damarion Morehead, 12, who was struck in the head during the gunfire.
Emergency responders rushed the child to a hospital for treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, Morehead later died from his injuries.

Police Arrest Suspected Shooter

In a statement, Metro Nashville police described what investigators believe occurred during the fight.
“During the brawl, Orr reached into his waistband to retrieve a handgun. At this point, persons involved in the fight began to run away. Shots were fired and Morehead fell to the ground.”
Authorities later located and arrested Orr.
During questioning, investigators say he admitted to disposing of a handgun by placing it inside a sewer. Police subsequently recovered the weapon as part of the ongoing investigation.
Dispute Allegedly Started Over a Female
According to investigators, the altercation that led to the shooting reportedly began because of a dispute involving a female.
Officials have not released additional details about the nature of the disagreement or the relationship between those involved.
