San Francisco, California — A mother and her preteen daughter are fighting for their lives after a powerful sneaker wave unexpectedly swept them into the Pacific Ocean at a popular San Francisco beach, prompting an emergency rescue operation and renewed warnings about dangerous coastal conditions.
The incident occurred Thursday afternoon at Baker Beach, a scenic but often hazardous stretch of coastline known for its strong surf and unpredictable waves.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene after receiving reports that two people had been knocked into the ocean by a sudden wave.
Wave Reportedly Pulled Pair About 100 Feet Into Ocean
According to the San Francisco Fire Department, the mother and child were standing near the rocks at the northeastern section of Baker Beach when the incident occurred.
Fire Capt. Jonathan Baxter said the wave struck without warning.
“A wave came out of nowhere and grabbed them.”
