Washington Teen Survives Terrifying 30-Minute Bear Standoff After Trying Unexpected Tactic

Mount Si, Washington — A Washington teenager is sharing his remarkable survival story after a terrifying encounter with a black bear that left him fearing for his life during a hike on one of the state’s most popular trails.

The incident unfolded on June 16 at Mount Si, where a group of friends was enjoying a hike when they unexpectedly crossed paths with a mother bear and her cub. What began as a routine outdoor adventure quickly turned into a life-threatening ordeal that lasted nearly half an hour.

Now recovering from the frightening encounter, Nolely Pina says he still struggles to understand how he made it out safely.

“I really don’t even know how I’m back here, to be honest,” Pina told KIRO-TV.

Bear Charged Group of Hikers on Popular Trail

According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), the attack occurred around 1 p.m. when three hikers were approximately 2.7 miles up the Mount Si trail.

Officials said a black bear charged the group and swiped at one of the hikers during the encounter.

As the situation escalated, Pina said he attempted one of the most commonly recommended responses by making himself appear larger and louder in hopes of discouraging the bear.

However, the tactic did not have the desired effect. The bear continued advancing toward him and one of his friends, forcing them to make a split-second decision.

Teen Lost Shoes and Pants During Desperate Escape

As panic set in, Pina and his friend ran in different directions in an effort to escape. During the chaotic retreat, the teenager tumbled down part of the mountain through thick vegetation.

The fall was so severe that he lost both his shoes and pants while rolling through the brush.

After finally reaching flatter ground, he hoped the danger had passed. Instead, he realized the bear had followed him down the slope and remained nearby.

Alone, injured, and trapped, Pina feared the worst.

“I just started praying,” Pina said. “Like, ‘Please get me out of here.’”

What followed was an agonizing standoff that lasted approximately 30 minutes.

Pina said the bear repeatedly refused to leave and scratched his leg on two occasions during the encounter. Throughout the ordeal, he cycled through several survival strategies in an attempt to stay alive.

At different points, he tried playing dead, making noise to scare the bear away, and even attempting to fight back.

Despite his efforts, nothing seemed to work.

“My heart was just racing so fast, just thinking I was going to die,” he recalled.

As the minutes passed, the teenager became increasingly desperate for a solution.

One Last Tactic Finally Sends Bear Running

After exhausting several options, Pina decided to try something different. Using a loud whistle, he blasted a sharp sound toward the bear.

This time, the reaction was immediate.

The unexpected noise startled the animal and finally caused it to retreat, ending the frightening confrontation.

The successful tactic allowed Pina to escape and eventually receive help.

Wildlife Officials Search for Bear

Following the attack, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife temporarily closed the area while officials attempted to locate the bear involved.

Authorities initially announced plans to search for the animal, but later reported that they were unable to find it.

The agency has not provided additional information regarding the bear’s whereabouts.

While the encounter ended with injuries rather than tragedy, Pina’s experience serves as a powerful reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters and the importance of remaining alert when exploring bear country.
