Ascension Parish, Louisiana — Rapper Mystikal has reportedly been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to a reduced rape charge stemming from a 2022 case that led to his arrest in Louisiana.
The artist, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, appeared in court Tuesday where a judge handed down the sentence following his guilty plea earlier this year. The ruling marks a significant development in a case that has drawn widespread attention due to both the seriousness of the allegations and the rapper’s prior legal history.
Guilty Plea Led to Reduced Charge
According to reports, Tyler pleaded guilty in March to third-degree rape, a lesser charge than the original first-degree rape accusation filed against him following his 2022 arrest.
As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors chose not to pursue several additional charges that had originally been filed in the case.
Those charges included allegations of false imprisonment, domestic abuse battery by strangulation, simple robbery, and criminal damage to property.
The plea deal eliminated the need for a trial and ultimately resulted in Tuesday’s sentencing hearing.
Victim Addressed Court Before Sentencing
During the proceedings, the victim reportedly addressed the court and urged the judge to impose the maximum penalty available. According to courtroom reports, she recounted details of the assault and the impact it had on her life.
Tyler also addressed the court during the hearing.
“If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence,” Tyler reportedly said in response to the victim’s statement.
The judge ultimately imposed a 20-year prison sentence following arguments from both sides.
Defense Sought to Withdraw Guilty Plea
Just days before sentencing, Tyler’s legal team filed a motion seeking to withdraw the guilty plea he entered in March.
The filing argued that the rapper did not fully understand the consequences of the plea agreement and lacked sufficient time to consider its long-term impact.
According to court documents, attorneys claimed Tyler was experiencing significant emotional distress and felt pressured to make an immediate decision when he accepted the plea arrangement.
Despite those arguments, the sentencing proceeded as scheduled. An attorney representing Tyler did not immediately comment publicly following the sentencing reports.
Case Stemmed From 2022 Allegations
The criminal case originated in August 2022 after authorities investigated allegations involving a woman who was reportedly acquainted with Tyler.
According to law enforcement records cited in local reports, the woman alleged that she was at Tyler’s Prairieville residence when an argument began after he accused her of taking money from him.

Investigators alleged the confrontation escalated into physical violence.
Authorities previously claimed the woman suffered minor injuries during the incident and was later hospitalized. Following the investigation, Tyler was arrested and booked into jail on multiple charges, including first-degree rape.
Long History of Legal Troubles
The latest conviction adds to a lengthy legal history involving the rapper. At the time of his 2022 arrest, Tyler was already registered as a lifetime sex offender due to a prior sexual assault conviction from 2003.
That conviction resulted in a prison sentence of approximately six years before he was released in 2010.
In addition, Tyler faced separate rape and kidnapping allegations in 2017. He spent more than a year in custody before eventually securing release on bond while those proceedings continued.
Tuesday’s sentencing represents the latest chapter in a series of legal battles that have followed the Louisiana rapper throughout much of his career.
With the sentence now imposed, Tyler is expected to serve the prison term ordered by the court unless future legal challenges alter the outcome.
