Chicago, Illinois — After enjoying two consecutive days of cooler-than-average June temperatures, residents across the Chicago area are being urged to prepare for potentially dangerous weather as forecasters warn of a heightened risk of severe storms on Wednesday.
Meteorologists say the region could experience tornadoes, damaging winds, heavy rain, frequent lightning, and hail, making Wednesday the most concerning weather day of the week.
While Tuesday is expected to bring only isolated storm activity, attention is quickly shifting toward a stronger weather system forecast to move through the Midwest by midweek.
Cooler Conditions Continue Before Storms Arrive
Tuesday will begin with partly cloudy skies and temperatures dipping into the 50s overnight.
As morning progresses, increasing clouds and strengthening winds are expected as the next weather system approaches the region. Some areas could see scattered rain showers and a few thunderstorms during the day.
Forecasters have placed portions of the region, particularly areas in northwest Indiana, under a Level 1 severe weather risk for Tuesday.
The primary threats with any stronger storms on Tuesday include hail and gusty winds. However, weather experts emphasize that severe storms should remain isolated and relatively limited.
By afternoon, sunshine is expected to return to many communities, helping temperatures climb into the middle 70s despite continued breezy conditions.
Wednesday Brings Greater Severe Weather Concerns
The weather outlook changes significantly on Wednesday.
Forecasters have already issued a Level 3 severe weather risk across much of the Chicago metropolitan area, indicating a greater potential for organized and potentially dangerous storms.
The biggest concern at this time is the possibility of tornado development.
Meteorologists say atmospheric conditions could become favorable for rotating thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, particularly during the late afternoon and evening hours.
In addition to the tornado threat, storms may generate wind gusts exceeding 70 mph, which can cause tree damage, power outages, and hazardous travel conditions.
Large hail, intense lightning, and periods of heavy rainfall are also possible as storms move through the region.
Most Dangerous Storm Window Expected Late Wednesday
Current forecast models suggest the most active period for severe weather will occur between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Wednesday. However, forecasters caution that morning thunderstorms could influence how the atmosphere develops later in the day.
If early-day storms leave behind cloud cover or stabilize the atmosphere, the severe threat could be reduced. On the other hand, if conditions recover quickly, stronger storms may develop by late afternoon.
Because of these uncertainties, weather officials are encouraging residents to stay informed and monitor forecast updates throughout the day.
Forecast details could continue changing over the next 24 to 36 hours as new weather data becomes available.

Quieter Weather Returns Later This Week
Once the midweek storm system moves through, conditions are expected to improve considerably. Thursday through Saturday currently look calm and comfortable, with partly cloudy skies and daytime temperatures remaining in the mid-70s.
The pleasant stretch may not last through the entire weekend, however.
Forecasters are tracking another chance of rain for Sunday that could affect outdoor activities and travel plans. While widespread all-day rainfall is not expected at this time, some areas could experience heavier showers during parts of the day.
Temperatures are expected to remain seasonably mild, with highs in the 70s and overnight lows in the 50s. Some lingering showers may continue into Monday before drier weather potentially returns by Tuesday.
How Residents Can Prepare
With the potential for severe weather increasing, residents are encouraged to review emergency plans, ensure weather alerts are enabled on mobile devices, and identify a safe location in case tornado warnings are issued.
As forecast conditions continue evolving, staying informed could be critical if severe storms develop Wednesday afternoon and evening.
