Oakland, California — A Bay Area nurse known for sharing health advice and uplifting conversations on TikTok is being remembered for his compassion, dedication, and commitment to helping others after he was killed during an alleged robbery in Oakland.
Friends, relatives, colleagues, and thousands of social media followers are mourning the loss of 33-year-old Lartey Solomon, a registered nurse who became known online as “Nurse Solomon.” Authorities say he was shot and killed on May 31 while walking to his vehicle after a night out with a friend.
The tragedy has left a family grieving, a young daughter without her father, and a community reflecting on the life of a healthcare worker who spent years educating and caring for others.
Murder Charges Filed in Connection With Fatal Shooting
According to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, 39-year-old Shacory Carnell Daniels has been charged with murder in connection with Solomon’s death.
Prosecutors allege that Solomon was walking near 14th Street and Harrison Street in Oakland when the fatal encounter occurred. Authorities believe the shooting happened during an attempted robbery.
Daniels was arrested several days later in Menlo Park and now faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted robbery-related offenses, firearm enhancements, and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.
Court records indicate that his next scheduled court appearance is set for June 30.
Family Says Solomon Tried to Cooperate
Family members told local media that Solomon and a friend had been leaving a nightclub and were walking back to their vehicles when they were approached by a man demanding a chain he was wearing.
His mother, Florence Edward, said her son appeared willing to comply with the demands.
“This man approached him again and said, ‘Give me your chain,’” Edward said. “My son says, ‘You can have…’ He was ready to take off everything.”
According to family members, Solomon’s friend was heading toward his own vehicle when gunshots suddenly rang out.
The devastating loss has been especially difficult for loved ones who describe Solomon as someone who feared firearms and violence.
“He was scared of guns,” said his brother, Emmanuel Solomon. “For him to die of gun violence, that’s sad and really tough for us.”
From Ghana Immigrant to Respected Nurse
Solomon’s journey inspired many who knew him.
According to a fundraising campaign established to support funeral expenses and assist his family, Solomon immigrated from Ghana and eventually settled in Oakland. He later attended Samuel Merritt University before pursuing a career in nursing.
Over the years, he worked at healthcare facilities throughout the Bay Area, including Alameda Healthcare and Wellness Center and Kindred Hospital in San Leandro.
Friends and colleagues say healthcare was more than a profession for Solomon—it was a passion.
His TikTok videos, which focused on health education, wellness, and everyday life, attracted more than 20,000 followers and generated over one million views.
“He was passionate about educating people on their health and empowering them to make informed decisions about their well-being,” organizers of the fundraiser wrote.
They added that patients trusted him, coworkers respected him, and many people found comfort in his kindness and compassion.
Remembered as a Devoted Father and Mentor
Beyond his work as a nurse and content creator, Solomon is being remembered as a loving father and devoted family man. Loved ones say he consistently made time for the people closest to him, despite his professional responsibilities.
“Lartey was not just a headline,” said his sister-in-law, Nana Ekua Solomon. “What Lartey was doing online wasn’t for financial reasons, it was his passion. We want his legacy to still live.”
Family members described him as someone who valued relationships, encouraged others, and remained deeply connected to those he cared about.
The loss has created what relatives describe as an immeasurable void.
A daughter has lost her father, parents have lost their son, and countless patients, friends, and followers have lost someone who dedicated his life to helping others live healthier lives.
As the criminal case moves forward, many in the Oakland community continue honoring Solomon’s memory and the positive impact he made both online and in person.
