Midland, Texas — A deadly shooting and hours-long police standoff shook the Midland community Friday after a gunman opened fire on officers and civilians, leaving one person dead and 10 others injured before authorities located the suspect deceased inside a barricaded building.
The incident began shortly after 8 a.m. local time when law enforcement responded to reports of gunfire in the southwestern portion of the city. What followed was a rapidly evolving situation that prompted a massive police response, hospital lockdowns, and widespread concern throughout the community.
Suspect Opened Fire During Police Response
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the suspect was identified as Victor Mata Villarreal, who authorities said fired at both law enforcement officers and bystanders as officers moved into the area.
Investigators said Villarreal eventually barricaded himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic, triggering a lengthy standoff.
Authorities used specialized equipment, including drones and a robotic device, to monitor the building during the operation.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong later confirmed that the suspect’s body was located around 12:30 p.m. after officers deployed a robot and drone into the structure.
Officials said no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
Suspect Was Already Wanted by Police
Authorities revealed that Villarreal had already been the subject of an active search before Friday’s shooting.
According to Midland police, he was wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer following an incident on Wednesday night.
Investigators said Villarreal allegedly fired at officers during a vehicle pursuit and managed to escape despite exchanging gunfire with law enforcement.
The earlier encounter led to an intensive search effort, which ultimately culminated in Friday’s deadly events.
Community Member Helped Alert Authorities
Witness Lee Carlisle told reporters that he had received a public alert regarding Villarreal after the Wednesday incident.
On Friday morning, a woman reportedly informed Carlisle that she had seen the suspect near a local motel. Carlisle said he immediately contacted authorities.
“I seen him cross the street from the hotel to the gas station,” Carlisle said. “I called the police, dispatch, immediately.”
Within minutes, law enforcement officers flooded the area.
Carlisle described seeing a large-scale police presence that included patrol officers, investigators, drones, Texas Rangers, and undercover vehicles.
“Had to be, seems like, 50 police officers, like a small army,” he said.
Victims Rushed to Hospital
Midland Memorial Hospital confirmed that nine victims were treated at the facility following the shooting.
Hospital officials said four patients required surgery. By Friday afternoon, three had already moved into recovery while one remained in surgery.
The remaining five patients were treated and later discharged.
As a precaution, the hospital briefly entered lockdown while authorities worked to determine whether the suspect remained at large.
A local resident identified only as Jane said hospital staff acted professionally throughout the emergency.
“There was a sense of calm and professionalism,” she said.

Jane also expressed fear following the incident.
“It makes me really scared that there are people walking around with guns who can just kill you and kill anyone around you.”
Victim Identified as City Employee
Late Friday, Midland officials identified the person killed in the shooting as Ed Scott, a city employee who was widely known for his involvement in local softball organizations.
In a statement, city leaders remembered Scott as a devoted husband, father, and respected member of the community.
“Ed was a person involved in the community, specifically working as an integral figure with local and regional softball organizations.”
Mayor Blong also expressed sympathy for everyone affected by the tragedy.
“My heart breaks for the victims and their families,” she said.
Investigation Continues
Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the suspect’s actions and timeline leading up to the attack.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s office released a statement offering condolences to the victims, their families, and the Midland community as the city begins the difficult process of healing.
The shooting marks another tragic chapter for a community now grappling with loss, recovery, and questions about how the violence unfolded.
