A violent storm system tore through Ocean County Thursday evening, triggering a tornado warning and unleashing wind gusts so powerful that meteorologists rarely see them this far inland — and the numbers coming in from the Jersey Shore are staggering.
The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for parts of Ocean County, including Long Beach Island, as a line of severe thunderstorms rapidly pushed through the region. Residents were urged to immediately seek shelter inside a sturdy building and stay away from windows. The warning remained in effect until 8:30 p.m.
Officials warned that if a tornado had touched down, flying debris and damaged trees posed a serious risk of injury to anyone caught outdoors. A tornado warning is typically issued only when a funnel cloud is spotted on the ground — or when radar detects dangerous wind rotation suggesting one is imminent.
The storm did not stop at wind alone. Multiple severe thunderstorm warnings were issued simultaneously across Ocean and Burlington counties, along with a flash flood warning as the slow-moving system dumped heavy rainfall on already saturated ground. Quarter-sized hail was also reported as possible during the height of the storm.
When wind reports started coming in from the shore, the readings were alarming:
- 84 mph — Surf City
- 77 mph — Ship Bottom
- 73 mph — Ship Bottom
- 65 mph — Ship Bottom
- 64 mph — Surf City
To put that in perspective, winds of 74 mph officially mark the threshold of a Category 1 hurricane. Surf City briefly crossed that line Thursday night.
The tornado warning expired at 8:30 p.m. with no confirmed tornado touching down. However, the wind damage left behind tells its own story — and emergency crews across Ocean County were assessing conditions late into the evening.
Residents are urged to remain cautious of downed power lines, debris on roadways, and any flooding that may still be present in low-lying areas.
