In a bold stride towards redefining cannabis culture, Kalamazoo, Michigan now hosts one of the state’s premier cannabis consumption lounges, Only Alien Cannabis Co., situated at 4525 West KL Ave. This innovative hub, which opened its doors earlier this month, paves the way for a unique gathering space where individuals 21 and older can legally purchase, grow, and enjoy cannabis in a welcoming environment.

Merging the ambiance of a traditional bar with the progressive nature of cannabis culture, Only Alien offers a novel venue for enthusiasts and newcomers alike to explore the world of cannabis. Co-owner Royal Laraway IV, who’s been cultivating the plant since the legalization of medical marijuana in Michigan nearly two decades ago, emphasizes the lounge’s commitment to quality and community. “Only Alien stands for being true to yourself,” he remarked, underscoring the inclusive ethos of the lounge.

Notably, Only Alien distinguishes itself not only as a lounge and dispensary but also as a microgrow operation, providing patrons with meticulously hand-trimmed batches grown on-site. This tri-functional model is a first in Michigan, featuring a Class A Microgrow and consumption lounge under one roof. It joins Hot Box Social in Hazel Park and Kalkushka Lounge in Kalkaska as one of the few establishments licensed for on-site cannabis consumption in Michigan – yet, it stands alone in offering an on-site grow operation.

The interior echoes the establishment’s forward-thinking philosophy, decked with space-themed murals and equipped with a state-of-the-art air filtration system. Guests are invited to enjoy their cannabis in a sleek seating area, complete with ashtrays and the option to rent or buy smoking apparatus. However, to maintain quality and safety, Only Alien permits only cannabis purchased on-site to be consumed within its walls.

Open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Only Alien presents a secure, alcohol-free zone where cannabis enthusiasts can connect without fear of legal repercussions. The lounge’s origins in a space once occupied by the beloved Great Lakes Shipping Co. restaurant, combined with funding sourced from family and friends, underscores a deep-rooted community connection.

Looking forward, co-owner and former “Sleeping with Sirens” drummer, Gabe Barham, envisions blending cannabis with creativity through music events and brand collaborations. With plans to expand and possibly introduce food options, Only Alien is setting the stage for a dynamic evolution of cannabis culture in Michigan.
