A 15-year-old Wisconsin boy is heading to prison after pleading guilty to orchestrating the armed kidnapping of a 7-year-old child in front of his father — all for a $100,000 ransom. Barry Alan Coleman, who was just 14 at the time of the crime, was charged as an adult in Milwaukee County.
How It Happened
In July 2025, Jamal White, 7, and his father were returning home from a park when a white Jeep Renegade pulled into their driveway and blocked their car. An armed man jumped out, causing the father to run inside — but Jamal fled toward the backyard.
The father watched helplessly as his son screamed “Daddy!” repeatedly before being grabbed, carried back to the vehicle, and driven away.
Surveillance footage showed co-defendant Fabian Johnson pointing a handgun while Coleman — also armed — chased the child, picked him up, and carried him to the waiting Jeep. A third suspect, Corey Williams, drove the vehicle.
The Ransom Demand
Coleman had originally planned to rob Jamal’s mother, reportedly a known drug dealer. When she never came home, the plan shifted to the father — and when he escaped inside, Coleman announced the plan had changed again. The group called the boy’s mother demanding $100,000 in cash and jewelry.
Investigators say Coleman and Johnson even discussed harming the child to prove they were serious, but abandoned the idea after Williams objected.
How Jamal Was Found
Police rescued Jamal roughly 24 hours after the abduction. The boy later told investigators he spent the time playing with toys, watching cartoons, and eating McDonald’s while being held captive.
What Happens Next
Coleman pleaded guilty to robbery with use of force and firearm possession. He faces up to 25 years — 15 years of initial confinement followed by 10 years of extended supervision. Sentencing is set for October 9.
Co-defendants Williams and Johnson also face charges in connection with the case.
