Queens, New York — A tragic scooter crash in Queens claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy Monday afternoon after the young driver allegedly swerved to avoid an open car door before colliding with a truck, according to New York City police.
The fatal incident occurred in the Flushing neighborhood and remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the collision.
Scooter Crash Happened in Flushing Neighborhood
According to the New York Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 12:40 p.m. near 162nd Street and 45th Avenue.
Investigators said two 13-year-old boys were traveling south on a motorized scooter, with one teenager operating the vehicle while the other rode as a passenger.
Police said the scooter approached a parked vehicle just as its driver opened a door. In an apparent attempt to avoid striking the door, the scooter operator made a sudden maneuver.
Teen Swerved Before Colliding With Truck
Authorities said the scooter driver swerved to avoid the open car door but then collided with a truck traveling in the same direction.
The impact caused both teenagers to be thrown from the scooter.
According to investigators, the passenger fell into the roadway and came into contact with the rear wheels of the truck.
Emergency crews quickly arrived and transported both boys to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital for treatment.
Despite lifesaving efforts, the 13-year-old passenger later died from his injuries. The scooter driver survived the crash and was listed in stable condition, police said.
Driver Remained at the Scene
Police said the truck driver stayed at the scene following the collision and cooperated with investigators. Authorities have not announced any arrests or criminal charges in connection with the incident.
Detectives continue examining evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
Investigators have also not released the identities of either teenager because they are minors.
