Stories That Move Us: Tribeca’s 2024 Films Confront Vital Themes

The 2024 Tribeca Festival has unveiled an impressive selection of cinematic works, featuring a diversity of talents including Lily Gladstone, Michael Cera, and exclusive documentary insights into the lives of icons such as Prince, Carlos Santana, and Dolly Parton.

Kicking off the event is the documentary “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge,” crafted by returning Tribeca filmmakers Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Trish Dalton.

Set to transform New York City from June 5-16, the festival boasts 103 feature films by 114 directors from 48 nations, highlighted by 86 world premieres. Curated from 13,016 submissions—a record number—this year’s lineup not only champions female directors, who helm half of the competing films, but also showcases the works of 36 BIPOC filmmakers, encapsulating 35% of all featured films.

Rookie directors with 30 films to their names will share the spotlight with 25 seasoned directors revisiting this grand cinematic rendezvous.

“In a period marked by exceptional submissions despite the film industry’s hurdles and the chaotic world stage, our filmmakers have delivered yet again—offering a roster of unexpected, evocative, and thought-provoking films,” expressed Cara Cusumano, the festival’s director. “These films confront a spectrum of topics from the crisis of global democracy to nuanced personal stories, underscoring the compelling force of cinema.”

For its landmark 23rd edition, the festival introduces competitive Viewpoints film series, spanning narratives, documentaries, and animations from around the globe. This series includes the animated “Boys Go to Jupiter” with voice work from Elsie Fisher and cohorts, and the gripping narrative “Darkest Miriam.” Documentaries like “Champions of the Golden Valley,” an inspirational tale of perseverance amidst political turmoil, and the investigative “Searching for Amani,” follow a young Kenyan’s investigation into the dark undercurrents that took his father’s life.

This year, Tribeca casts a spotlight on socio-political advocacy through works such as “The Cranes Call,” chronicling the Clooney Foundation’s fearless investigators in Ukraine, and “America’s Burning,” dissecting the economic origins of divisiveness, with Michael Douglas providing narration.
