Philadelphia Region Faces Flood Risk as Strong Storms Move In Thursday

Thursday has been designated a Weather Alert Day for the Philadelphia region as showers and thunderstorms spread across the area through the afternoon and evening, bringing a heightened risk of flash flooding.

Morning Commute Should Stay Dry

The day is expected to start mostly dry, so residents heading out for the morning commute should see decent conditions. Clouds will thicken through the late morning, with scattered showers developing around midday. The more significant impacts — heavier rain and storms — are expected to hold off until the afternoon.

Heavy Rain Is the Main Concern

Forecasters say the biggest threat Thursday is not wind or hail, but rainfall totals. Downpours could arrive in repeated rounds, and poorly draining areas may flood quickly once the heaviest bands move through. A slight risk for excessive rainfall has been outlined along and east of Interstate 95, where localized flash flooding is possible.

Farther west and south, from around Interstate 78 southward, there is also a slight risk of severe thunderstorms. Any stronger cells in that zone could produce damaging wind gusts.

Commuters should plan for a slower, messier evening drive home, with reduced visibility and ponding possible on roadways. Anyone with outdoor plans Thursday afternoon or evening is encouraged to monitor radar conditions closely.

Quieter Weather Returns Friday — Briefly

Sunshine is expected to return Friday, with highs climbing into the mid-80s. However, the front responsible for Thursday’s storms may stall nearby rather than clearing the region entirely. That means unsettled weather could linger into the weekend, with showers possible Friday night into Saturday and another round of showers or storms possible Sunday.
