PHOENIX — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a dust storm warning for the southeastern portion of the Phoenix metro area as strong winds and blowing dust move into the region Wednesday evening, according to NWS.
A severe thunderstorm warning is currently in effect for Phoenix, Mesa and Chandler until 10:30 p.m., NWS reported, as thunderstorms continue developing behind the outflow boundary.
NWS also issued a blowing dust advisory for residents across Maricopa and Pinal counties, warning of potentially hazardous travel conditions. The advisory covers most of Pinal County along with the southern and western regions of Maricopa County, and is in effect from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Aug. 19. According to NWS, gusty winds in these areas could reach up to 35 mph, significantly reducing roadway visibility.
Officials are urging drivers to avoid attempting to drive through blowing dust. Motorists caught in low-visibility conditions are advised to safely pull over and wait until visibility improves before continuing their commute.
NWS noted that strong winds are also expected to affect Gila County as the system moves through the region.
In addition, a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Maricopa, Pinal, Gila, Pima, Cochise, Santa Cruz and Graham counties, remaining in effect until 11 p.m. on Aug. 19.
Residents across the affected counties are advised to stay alert for updated NWS alerts as the storm system continues to develop through the evening.
