WACO, Texas — A woman who dedicated herself to caring for an elderly man says she was attacked in the middle of the night — by that man’s own son.
McLennan County deputies were called to the 1000 block of Old Bethany Road just after 3 a.m. on August 5 after a domestic disturbance was reported at the home.
What the victim told deputies
The caregiver told investigators that Adam Bennet, 40, approached her and spat in her face before slapping and punching her hard enough to knock her to the floor.
She reported ringing in her ear following the blow.
The alleged attack did not stop there. According to the affidavit, Bennet then squeezed her face and mouth so tightly that she blacked out from being unable to breathe.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
A threat that followed the attack
After the alleged assault, Bennet reportedly told the woman that if she said anything about what happened, he would kill her and her children.
He also told her to watch her back.
The threat added another charge to his arrest — terroristic threat — on top of the assault charge.
Prior conviction makes charges more serious
This is not Bennet’s first run-in with the law over family violence.
Court records show he was convicted in McLennan County in 2022 for assault causing bodily injury to a family member.
That prior conviction elevated Tuesday’s assault charge to assault of a household member by impeding breathing with a previous conviction — a more serious felony-level offense.
Where the case stands now
Bennet is currently behind bars on a $60,000 bond as the case moves through the court system.
The woman he allegedly attacked remains the caregiver for his 75-year-old father, a detail that has left many in the community deeply unsettled.
