El Paso, Texas Sees Flooding as Storms Roll Through the Borderland

EL PASO, Texas — Sunday evening brought another round of heavy weather to the Borderland, with scattered storms — some quite strong — sweeping through the region on Aug. 16 and leaving parts of East El Paso underwater once again.

Residents in several East Side neighborhoods reported standing water on streets as the rain moved in, with the National Weather Service issuing a flood warning covering the far eastern portion of El Paso County. That warning was set to remain in effect until 7:15 p.m.

Just across the state line, a section of Dona Ana County was placed under its own flood warning, which forecasters later extended to 7:45 p.m. as the storms lingered.

Same Stretch of Road, Flooded Again

For drivers on Montana Avenue, Sunday’s storm felt like deja vu. The Texas Department of Transportation confirmed that Montana westbound at Tierra Este had to be shut down once more because of flooding — the same stretch that went underwater the night before.

That earlier flooding, on Saturday, forced an overnight closure of the road. Crews had only just reopened it Sunday morning before the new round of storms sent water rising again.

Beyond Montana Avenue, other pockets of East El Paso also saw flooding as the storms pushed through, according to local reports.

What Borderland Residents Should Know

With the ground already saturated from back-to-back storms, officials are urging drivers to avoid flooded roadways and to never attempt to drive through standing water. Conditions can change quickly during monsoon season, and low-lying areas of East El Paso appear especially prone to repeat flooding this week.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather alerts as more storms are possible in the days ahead.
