KANSAS CITY, Missouri — A routine traffic stop for a stolen vehicle turned into something no officer on that shift was expecting.
The arresting officer kept hearing an unusual sound. It was faint, strange — something that resembled a goat ringtone coming from somewhere inside the car.
He asked the suspect about it.
‘No, those are real goats’
The out-of-state suspect did not hesitate.
“No, those are real goats. They’re in my trunk,” he said, according to the Kansas City Police Department.
Officers popped the trunk — and sure enough, two baby goats were sitting inside.
The kids were in rough shape
What could have been a strange but funny moment quickly turned serious.
The goats were removed from the vehicle and handed over to KC Pet Project. Veterinarians examined them and found the babies were severely underweight, dealing with a significant intestinal parasite load, and still young enough that they needed bottle-feeding just to survive.
They were fragile. And they needed help fast.
A foster family stepped up
KC Pet Project placed the goats with a foster family who took on the round-the-clock care of bottle-feeding two baby animals back to health.
It was not a small commitment. But the family showed up for it every single day.
After the mandatory 10-day hold passed, the decision was easy.
The foster family had already fallen in love. They officially adopted both goats and gave them names that fit perfectly — Denver and Aspen.
From a trunk to a forever home
What started as an arrest for car theft ended with two tiny animals getting a second chance at life.
Denver and Aspen went from a dark trunk on the side of a Missouri road to a home with a family who chose them.
Sometimes the strangest calls turn into the best stories.
