A Massachusetts teenager is facing murder charges after his mother and younger brother were found dead inside their family home this week, in a case authorities are calling one of the most disturbing they’ve encountered.
Officials say 17-year-old Arjun Aravind was taken into custody early Wednesday in Wayland, hours after his father requested a welfare check when he couldn’t reach anyone at the family’s Acton residence. According to the Middlesex District Attorney, the boy’s mother, 45, and his 14-year-old brother were both discovered with visible signs of trauma — the brother on the home’s first floor, the mother in the basement. Investigators have not yet confirmed the exact cause of death or what weapon was used.
Authorities believe the two were killed sometime during a multi-hour window Tuesday, between when the father left for work in the morning and when he returned that evening to an unanswered door.
According to officials, the teen was located after he allegedly fled in his mother’s car, which was found abandoned in a parking lot following a business alarm call. He was taken into custody without incident.
He now faces two counts of murder along with assault and battery and motor vehicle theft charges. He was arraigned on the theft charge Wednesday, with additional charges expected to be addressed in court Thursday.
What has drawn particular concern from investigators is what they describe as troubling behavior leading up to the killings — including searches allegedly made using an AI chatbot exploring hypothetical scenarios involving harm to his own family. Officials say the teen had also previously run away from home and was known to local police.
Neighbors described a scene of flashing lights, emergency vehicles, and search efforts that swept through the quiet street Tuesday night, calling the deaths of the family members a shock to the close-knit community.
No motive has been officially confirmed, and the investigation remains ongoing.
