A tree came down in seconds — what happened to the worker trapped inside the Amazon truck shocked the whole street

PLAINFIELD, New Jersey — One moment it was a stormy Friday night. The next, a massive tree came crashing down on an Amazon delivery truck — with a worker still sitting inside.

The impact was so violent that neighbors thought a house had collapsed.

“It sounded pretty bad. I thought it actually hit the house when I heard it. It just sounded like an explosion pretty much,” said Ramon, a witness who lives nearby.

The Driver Was Out. His Coworker Was Not.

The truck’s driver had stepped out to deliver packages when the storm hit. But a second worker remained inside — and was now trapped beneath hundreds of pounds of tree and crushed metal.

What happened next came down to one neighbor and a kitchen knife.

Shatia Winston described the moment a neighbor from next door ran over and asked for something sharp.

“He cut the seat belt off and got him out, and he was walking, holding his stomach,” Winston said.

No professional rescue team. No special equipment. Just a neighbor who moved fast when it mattered.

Amazon Packages, Power Lines, and a Street Left Stunned

The falling tree did not stop at the truck. It pulled down power lines on its way down, cutting electricity for more than a dozen customers on the block.

Some residents only found out something had gone wrong through their Amazon delivery notifications. Leonard King had been waiting on a package when he got an alert saying his driver had run into an issue.

“I’m guessing that was the issue,” he said.

Amazon released a statement the same night: “This was a scary incident. We’re grateful that the Delivery Service Partner drivers are safe and to everyone who responded at the scene.”

By Saturday morning, crews were on site working to remove the tree.

What struck people most was not the storm, not the crushed truck — it was the stranger next door who did not hesitate for a second.
