SPRING, Texas — A little girl, just two years old, had no way to call for help. She couldn’t explain what happened. She couldn’t tell anyone who hurt her.
She could only survive — and hope someone would notice.
On Thursday, deputies with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office responded to an Exxon gas station on Cypresswood Drive in Spring, just north of Houston. A man and a woman had pulled in asking for help for an unresponsive toddler.
That man was Gerardo Gonzalez, 29 — the mother’s boyfriend.
What Investigators Found
Deputies rushed to care for the child until medics arrived. When the girl reached a local hospital, doctors discovered what investigators would later call “multiple life-threatening injuries.”
She was airlifted to a second hospital, where she underwent surgery.
As of Friday evening, she remains in critical condition.
How It Unraveled
Gonzalez and the child’s mother directed investigators to a home on Rendezvous Court in Spring — where, authorities say, the toddler had become unresponsive.
The investigation determined that Gonzalez had allegedly struck the toddler multiple times, causing her injuries.
He was arrested, charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury, and booked into the Harris County Jail.
A Child Still Fighting
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office did not disclose what led up to the alleged attack. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities promising to release more information as it becomes available.
“Cases involving children are among the most heartbreaking first responders encounter,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “We remain committed to seeking justice on her behalf.”
Somewhere in a hospital in Harris County, a 2-year-old girl is still fighting for her life.
She deserved to be safe at home. She wasn’t.
