MILLVILLE, New Jersey — A quiet residential street became the center of a deadly confrontation early Thursday morning, leaving one man dead and an entire community searching for answers.
Shaun Murphy, 47, of Millville, was shot and killed on August 6 at a residence in the 300 block of Hazel Boulevard. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
How the Morning Turned Fatal
Police were called to the home in the early hours of Thursday morning after reports of a domestic disturbance.
When officers arrived and made contact with Murphy inside the residence, the situation escalated quickly.
John Borelli, a Sergeant with the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office, discharged his department-issued firearm, striking Murphy. Despite efforts, Murphy did not survive.
A Weapon Was Found at the Scene
Investigators recovered a handgun from the residence following the shooting.
That detail is now a central piece of an active investigation being led by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office — the state body responsible for reviewing all fatal police-involved shootings in New Jersey.
