BELINGTON, West Virginia — A man who opened his home to someone fresh out of rehab is now facing serious criminal charges after police say he turned that kindness into a nightmare.
Gregory Alan Baisi, 57, of Barbour County, was charged with one count of malicious assault following an incident that allegedly unfolded over three straight days inside his own residence.
It Started the Night the Victim Moved In
The victim had just been released from a rehabilitation facility in Elkins on Monday. He was renting a spare room at Baisi’s home — a place he thought would be safe.
That same night, police say Baisi began using methamphetamine, mushrooms, and alcohol.
By Tuesday morning, the victim was allegedly woken up by Baisi punching him in the face and head. He tried to block the strikes.
He Tried to Leave — and Was Refused
On Wednesday, the victim asked Baisi for a ride back to his home in Calhoun County.
Baisi’s response, according to court documents, was blunt: “Fat chance” and “I’m gonna put you back in rehab.”
The victim had no way out.
The Final Attack — And a Desperate Act to Survive
By Thursday, Baisi allegedly began assaulting the victim again — kicking and punching him in the head and face.
When troopers arrived, they found the victim with bruises and open lacerations on both arms and an open wound on his hip from being kicked.
Police say the beating only stopped after the victim pretended to be dead.
Once Baisi left the residence, the victim managed to escape and contact authorities.
Where Things Stand Now
Gregory Alan Baisi is currently being held at Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $60,000 bond.
The charge of malicious assault in West Virginia carries serious potential prison time if convicted.
This case serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a vulnerable person’s situation can turn dangerous — even inside a home where they sought safety.
